The story of the Mayfair family began with Jewllian Edward Mayfair. As the youngest of four sons, he was the true oddity. He wasn’t by any means the first dark wizard. He was, however, the first in his family to practice the dark arts. It was an embarrassment to say the least for his ministry working father, favored to be the next minister of magic. Jewllian’s father had tried to explain away his son’s interests as a young, ill-informed fascination of a young boy. When it became apparent that he was not simply a rebellious boy he was hidden away by his family. The summer before the Wizengamot’s election was to be held, Jewllian’s father disappeared. The ministry mounted a full investigation, but many could guess at what had happened to the minister-elect. And who had done it. In the few years that followed, Jewllian’s elder two brothers fell to the same fate as their father, the third found a permanent bed in St. Mungo’s.

The theory that Jewllian was the cause of the Mayfair’s disappearances was a well accepted one. After several lengthy investigations from the Ministry, no evidence could be found to convict Jewllian. As a wizard of the dark arts, and often hidden as a family’s dirty secret, he certainly had enough reason for revenge. Though the treatment in his childhood left a deep hatred for his family, the real reason behind their deaths was simply that Jewllian felt they did not deserve to carry the family name. He had a design for the name of Mayfair, and his brothers did not fit it.

Only after his family had died (and he subsequently gained control of his name) did Jewllian see fit to have his own children.
